SUMMARY:Friday Fireside Chat with George Stalk
DESCRIPTION:George Stalk is a legend in the field of strategy. He was called a “Johnny Appleseed” at respected strategy consultancy BCG\, invented a concept called time-based competition and has introduced many other ideas that have fundamentally shaped the field. He’s had a huge influence on my thinking and I’m thrilled that he will be joining me for a chat by the fireside!

SUMMARY:Friday Fireside Chat with Dessa
DESCRIPTION:And now for something completely different! I first learned about category-defying artist Dessa from her brilliant Hamilton-style rap song in honor of Janet Yellen\, the first female secretary of the Treasury. She’s a singer\, songwriter\, author\, speaker and just all-around fascinating person and I’m really looking forward to sharing an hour learning about her world. She has an acclaimed book “My Own Devices” and actively publishes new songs every Wednesday. And wouldn’t it make sense that someone I’d be talking to would write a rap song called “Terry Gross.” Join us – it will be a lot of fun!

SUMMARY:Friday Fireside Chat with David Bornstein
DESCRIPTION:Something we don’t do enough when looking for answers for big\, hairy social problems is find places where solutions are actually working and see how we might benefit from their success. David Bornstein’s “Fixes” column in the New York Times is a shining exception. He finds novel and unusual ways in which social problems can be tackled and has written three books. He’s founded the Solutions Journalism Network. I’m very excited to have him join me as we go through a moment of extraordinary social change – and social possibilities.

SUMMARY:The Davos of Human Capital
DESCRIPTION:The world was moving towards a model of greater people empowerment before the Covid pandemic\, but organizational models lagged behind – and had to adapt quickly as the crisis swept the globe. \nAs we look ahead to recovery\, we have no choice but to take a people-first approach to business. Why? We’ve learned that businesses have to create the conditions with people and society that enable them to flourish over time. Technology connected us\, but our shared human experience exposed our need for empathy\, care\, creativity and collaboration. This has reshaped the importance of unifying our approach to the planet\, our people and our businesses into a single-minded strategy. \nAt The Davos of Human Capital 2021\, Duke CE will convene a global conversation on what it means to humanize our organizations\, strategies and the way we work. \nYou’ll hear from Thinkers50 #1 strategy expert Rita McGrath on re-imagining strategy through a human lens and how leaders can capture the next wave of advantage in the post-pandemic era. Top global leaders and experts will share how they are unlocking the human capacity to explore\, invent and imagine our new reality with empathy\, creativity and collaboration.

SUMMARY:Center on Global Energy Policy Workshop: Energy and the “S” in ESG Investing
DESCRIPTION:Recent events from the COVID-19 pandemic to the killing of George Floyd have sparked social justice movements around the world and have placed diversity\, equity\, and inclusion at the forefront in politics\, classrooms\, and corporations. Financial institutions too are taking part as keen investors increasingly turn their attention to the “Social” aspects of Environmental\, Social and Governance (ESG) factors by recognizing their importance in generating long-term value for all stakeholders. \nThe Center on Global Energy Policy’s Women in Energy program (WIE) is pleased to host a discussion on what this focus on “Social” goals means for investment trends in the energy sector\, a topic of a recent commentary from WIE. As more capital flows screen for ESG criteria in final decision making\, what are the implications for the energy sector\, which has long struggled to recruit and retain women and other underrepresented groups and promote them to senior ranks? Panelists will consider how ESG is influencing decision-making across the full financial spectrum from venture capital to IPOs to publicly trading equity market trends. They will also address best practices\, policy recommendations\, and what energy companies are doing to address investor pressure on social issues.
