Susannah Fox’s wonderful MIT Press book “Rebel Health: A Field Guide to the Patient-Led Revolution in Medical Care” is a case in point. Fox was the Chief Technology Officer for the US Department of Health and Human Services\, where she led an open data and innovation lab\, and now is a consultant and advisor to forward-thinking organizations in the healthcare area. What I just love about her book\, which advances a similar message as Paul LeBlanc’s book “Broken\,” is that she shows how humans can create small revolutions by coming together with one anothers’ interests at heart. Scaling human systems is difficult – connecting patients\, caregivers and survivors to one another can bring their humanity back in. I was thrilled to meet Susannah in person after being introduced by another one of my favorite people\, expert on all things greater Princeton\, Barbara Figge Fox. DESCRIPTION:Frederick Pferdt was Google’s Chief Innovation Evangelist\, building a world-class organization that trained tens of thousands to face the world in a future-ready way. He is an Adjunct Professor at Stanford University’s Hasso Plattner Institute of Design\, where he teaches courses called things like “Hacking Your Innovation Mindset.” His brand-new book\, “Next is Now: How to Live Future Ready” was just published to tremendous acclaim in June. It made the Next Big Idea Club’s must-read list for September. I’m delighted that on October 25\, Frederick will be joining me to talk about the book\, his philosophy of being future-ready and why Optimism\, Openness\, Curiosity\, Experimentation\, Empathy and the mysterious “Dimension X” can let you take control of your future. In a world that seems at times to be bleak\, his optimistic perspective that we can all shape our futures is most welcome!

DESCRIPTION:Traditional models of leadership have been under fire for some time. Command and Control\, the chattering classes say\, should be relegated to the dustbins of history and in its place should emerge a new kind of leadership\, one which is inspiring\, empathetic and adaptive. It isn’t a coincidence\, argues my Friday Fireside Chat guest\, CNBC’s Media and Tech correspondent Julia Boorstin. In her wonderful book “When Women Lead – What They Achieve\, Why They Succeed\, How We Can Learn From Them\,” she shows how women have quietly triumphed in more and more bastions of formerly male dominated spaces\, such as Silicon Valley and in industries such as retail to apparel. In exploring this amazing progress more deeply\, she finds that these leaders are indeed adaptive\, empathetic\, likely to appreciate diversity and finding new markets in opportunities their male counterparts have overlooked\, sometimes for generations. I am super excited to welcome her to the Fireside (we’ve been working on this for at least 2 years!) and hope you can find the time to join us. Tom Peters had foreshadowed Julia’s findings by several decades\, arguing that our complex\, dynamic times lend themselves to women’s leadership. Julia’s research shows that he was absolutely right!

She studies the science of happiness\, emotional intelligence and social connection and has brought her considerable analytical and storytelling skills to her latest book. It’s called “Sovereign: Reclaim your freedom\, energy and power in a time of distraction\, uncertainty\, and chaos.” Her thesis is that we all have within us the power to increasingly free ourselves from the forces that cause us to be anything less than what we are truly capable of. She calls this being “sovereign” – a state in which you not only experience happiness and well-being but also maximize your gifts and strenghts\, bringing out the best in yourself. I’ll be talking about the new book and Emma’s other work in our Friday Fireside Chat and am looking forward to feeling more in control – and more inspired!
