New York Times: [Davos 2009 - Day 4 - Dealbook]

Industries facing severe structural change go through a seven-step progression before they manage to deal with it, said Rita McGrath, an associate professor at Columbia Business School.

1. Shock.
2. Denial. "This can't be happening to me."
3. Sadness. 'This is awful."
4. Anger. "I don't deserve this."
5. Bargaining.
6. Acceptance.
7. Renegotiation. It is then that companies find ways to change their business model to survive.

Rita McGrath's article Institutional Memory Goes Digital appears at Harvard Business Review (HBR List 2009). "Suppose every utterance and facial expression at a meeting were routinely captured and archived in high-definition digital video recordings -- searchable and available in perpetuity. Would this be a godsend or a nightmare? The answer is probably both, but we're about to find out for sure. Within a few years, a synthesis of technologies from an array of companies will make possible a "total recall system," or TRS, that can produce such recordings." Rita McGrath was quoted in an article entitled A New Helm for HR? by Scott Flander.

"It is no longer feasible to simply turn a company around quickly and then put it up for sale," says McGrath. "These companies no longer have the luxury of focusing only on the short term, she says."
